Headbang Labs: software and games for metalheads

A one-man software and games studio in South Africa. Web apps, pixel-art games, browser extensions and agent skills, built loud and proven by running them.

One person and a very disciplined toolchain

Headbang Labs is the studio of Duncan Bentley. Every product is designed and directed by him, built with AI coding agents, then tested the hard way: real browsers, headless QA bots that play whole game seasons, end-to-end tests that fail the build on bad data.

No team, no investors, no client list. Small, finished software that sells through marketplaces, and the public products ship under the HB LABS name.

In the lab

Built and running here. Private for now; demos on request.

  • Headbang Nights logo in chrome and fire pixel lettering

    Headbang Nights

Isometric pixel-art life-sim: a metalhead’s eight-week season in a fictional port city. Godot 4.7, every line of content in JSON, and a headless bot that plays full seasons to balance it.

    v0.1.2 in progress

  • Unbroken logo in burning pixel letters

    Unbroken

A sobriety tracker that looks like an arcade cabinet. React 19, Vite and Capacitor 8, with native storage, reminders and an Android build.

    v3.8

  • Eight Chrome extensions

EXORCIST blocks ads and trackers, YouTube included. CERBERUS catches phishing, with lookalike-domain checks for South African banks and SARS. RIPPER, WRAITH, THIRD EYE, MOSHMOJI and Chat Crypt cover the rest. No telemetry, no accounts.

Private, not on the Chrome Web Store

  • Grimspire

Browser game on its sixth release candidate, the “KVLT Fusion” build.

    Playable HTML build

  • KVLT BROs and Metalhead Brawler

Two HTML5 action games for the same crowd.

    Built, and in progress

  • Opportunity Engine

Scouts, ranks and tracks about 1,170 income ideas from Hacker News, Reddit and GitHub. Measured cost: 219 posts triaged and ranked for $0.013.

    Python, running daily

  • Video engines

Meme Creator, Metal Lyric Video and Stream: video rendered from code, frame by frame.

    Private

  • Meta Data Stripper

A Windows utility that strips hidden metadata out of files before you share them.

How a release gets forged

The same five stages for every product, and every one of them can be checked in the repos.

  1. Pick a real pain

One with a deadline, or a store that pushes new items to buyers.

  2. Check the facts at the source

Official docs and government spreadsheets, cited inside the product.

  3. Build the smallest finished thing

Data in files, a build that refuses bad data, end-to-end tests.

  4. Ship where South Africa gets paid

Marketplaces that pay out through PayPal, Payoneer or a direct EFT.

  5. Log it, reuse the engine

What worked goes in LEARNINGS.md, and the engine carries the next product.

Duncan Bentley, on every instrument

Solo developer, South Africa. He picks the problem, sets the art direction, directs the agents and signs off every build.

Before anything ships it gets run: in a real browser, by a bot, or by a test that plays it start to finish. If a fact can’t be traced to a source, it doesn’t go in the product, or on this page.

Sister brands: Bentley Studios makes art, cards, 3D and flight-sim scenery; Bentley House Publishing makes books and printed products.
